Notes from our meeting on February 5th Business Advisors’ Roundtable
Notes from our meeting on February 5th.
The way to effectively use of Social Media is very similar to traditional networking activities.
- Decide what we want to accomplish before we invest time and money in any activity
- One purpose might simply to stay in front of our prospects and clients so they do not forget us
- Use the social media vehicles our targets are using
- Stay within the culture of the social media we are using
- The more we focus on helping others rather than trying to sell, the more effective our efforts will be
If we have a mass market you are trying to reach, then Facebook and Twitter might be viable alternatives.
If we are looking to connect with professionals, then Linkedin might be a good choice.
Facebook has the best viral component tool and is also an easy way for non-technical types to provide visuals.

Hi Mark,
Just want to tell you the meeting today was good.
We covered a lot of information about using LinkedIn etc in a brief time. I had lots of questions and they were discussed thoroughly and to the point…
Best Regards,
Sue

Social Media Discussion Notes
Social networking is meeting and greeting using social sites
Social Media is content oriented
There are many varied sites including the ones I don’t use such as Inside919, Merchant Circle, Hi5, Exit Events, 4Square, etc.
You can make lists of your contacts on Twitter and Facebook and access them through the lists.
You can move LinkedIn connections into a spreadsheet.
Blogging
Find a blog that is focused on people you want to relate to and then comment
Be a guest blogger
Uses:
Referrals
Develop your personal community by building connections with people you want to know
Provide answers that may be of interest to people you might want to be your customers
To get in the door—but then you have to finish the job
Whether on social media or using traditional sources “casual networking” is not really effective but specific and intentional networking is effective. (Mark’s comment)
A NARD is a person who is Not Authorized to Render a Decision (Sue’s comment)
